SPOKI, SPort Orientation for Kids, aims to increase social inclusion and activate children aged 8-10 by finding their preferred sport using SportKompas and the exergaming. The outcome will deliver a new digital and innovative environment for physical education teachers and children on learning, experience, and self-evaluation, across primary schools in many cities in Europe. SportKompas, developed at Ghent University in 2011, is an innovative and scientifically grounded approach designed for children aged 8 to 10. The method assists children in identifying sports activities that align with their individual preferences and aptitudes.
The core philosophy behind SportKompas is to empower children with a sense of success, enjoyment, and motivation by guiding them towards sports that resonate with their interests. This not only fosters self-esteem but also contributes to their social integration and the cultivation of a healthy lifestyle. By concentrating efforts within schools, this project is inclusive, ensuring that every child, irrespective of diversity, culture, or socioeconomic background, can benefit.
Physical education teachers and coaches can leverage SportKompas test results to enhance children’s movement skills. Simultaneously, local governments gain valuable insights into children’s sports preferences to adapt their infrastructures: through cross-country knowledge transfer and accounting for geographical and cultural differences, this project aspires to establish a sustainable digital solution for cities in many EU countries. The expected result is an enhanced and sustainable capacity for collaboration, featuring both local implementation and international scale. The overarching societal impact aims to boost sports participation, health prevention, well-being, and integration on a multinational scale.
